The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
